Having just won three awards in the prestigious and I am dead chuffed for him and his good lady as they are two of the most genuine and helpful people you will find.
Kombucha has an almost cult following in the USA, Australia, and New Zealand and is currently growing in popularity in the UK but what is it and why is it becoming so popular?
Kombucha is not new, in fact that is an understatement as it was originally brewed back in 221BC by a Korean doctor called Kombu. Dr. Kombu was asked to treat the Japanese Emperor Inyoko who was suffering from a severe stomach complaint. Dr. Kombu brewed up a fermented green tea drink and successfully treated the Emperor's ailment with his ‘Kombucha.’ *(The Japanese word for tea is Cha, hence the name Kombu’s Cha or Kombucha). The beverage became so popular afterwards and gained such a reputation for giving an excess of energy and strength that Samurai warriors carried it with them in hip flasks and drank it before going into battle,
Known by the Chinese and Russians as ‘The Elixir of Life’ there have been many anecdotal stories of how people have felt the benefits of Kombucha there is no great secret behind it's popularity. Most people will know the benefits of Green Tea which is the base for Kombucha, however, the fermentation process in making Kombucha steps it up a gear and takes it to the next level in terms of it's strength!

The Nutra Kombucha Brewery is run by both in Skelmersdale Lancashire. Colin and Margaret's success story is one for us all to applaud as Colin was 61 when 4 years ago he started out on his quest to produce "amazingly different, nutritious and fortifying drinks." He and Margaret are constantly striving to introduce new types of Kombucha-based relatively inexpensive flavoured drinks to their product line.
When I interviewed Colin last year, his philosophy was as refreshing as my favourite Nutra, Ginger and Tumeric offering. "We are not in it to make loads of money, yes it would be great to make a bit and buy a new car, but we never got into this game for the cash. We want to keep it "boutique" and specialised. You meet so many great people at this level, people who are trying as hard as you are to succeed, but not with the corporate angst and hard sell pressures you get with the bigger boys. Don't get me wrong, the business has grown exponentially over the last 12 months both in terms of bottles sold and geography covered, and that is great validation, but we are still a small company. The most important thing from our perspective is we are producing a constantly great drink that has significant health benefits for you and your kids, one that is not expensive and tastes just great whilst complimenting any diet. By definition it is wonderful for faddy children who were into fizzy, sugary pop. It is very important to point out that Nutra Kombucha is low in sugar, 100% natural and is only on average around 45 calories per bottle. What is not to like. . . !
